Tynan Thorogood is a Canadian stage director, bass-baritone, and librettist. Currently based in Wales, he has garnered praise as a stage director for his nuance and musicality, as well as his holistic and grounded approach.

As an assistant director, he has recently worked on Welsh National Opera’s double bill of Bluebeard’s Castle + Oedipus Rex, (2026), as well as working on the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama’s recent productions of Orpheus in the Underworld and Alcina. As a stage director, he has recently premiered Feed Them and the micro-opera Swan of the Troubadour at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.

As a vocalist, he is recognized for his warm, powerful stage presence and a “voice like a sports car cruising down the highway.” Recent roles include Sid in Albert Herring (University of Alberta, 2025), Mars in Orfée aux enfers (University of Alberta, 2024), Samuel in The Pirates of Penzance (University of Alberta, 2023), the premiere of the character The Patient in Mari Alice Conrad’s chamber work the examination (2024), and as an inaugural member of Edmonton Opera’s Core Chorus (2024-2025 season, contract chorister for the 2023-2024 season). He is an accomplished recitalist and soloist, with credits as the Baritone Soloist in Fauré’s Requiem, (Cardiff Chamber Choir, 2026), Bass Soloist for Messiah at the Market (Edmonton Opera, 2024) Sarastro in From Enchantment to Elegy (University of Alberta, 2025) and Don Giovanni/Leporello in The Good, The Bad, Don Giovanni (University of Alberta, 2024), as well as several solo recitals. He is also an advocate for opera on film, and is currently developing a new work for the small screen: The Bass-Baritone’s Lament.  

Tynan holds a Master’s in Opera Directing from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama where he studied with Hannah Noone, and a Bachelor’s of Music in Vocal Performance from the University of Alberta where he studied with John Tessier.
